Life insurance is one of the few insurance products that is tailored specifically to you.

The cost of your policy will take into account your current age, height, weight, medical history, occupation, driving record, your family medical history and whether you have ever smoked. The cost also depends on the term and sum assured of the policy.

Be open about any medical conditions you have. Most insurers require a health report from your GP to verify your statement. Very few of us are in perfect health but this won't stop you from getting an affordable life insurance policy. People with coronary artery disease, cancer, diabetes, or a history of strokes in the family can be eligible for life insurance and it may be that you need to shop around to find an insurer that will cover you. Conditions such as clinical depression and obesity can affect your insurance as can certain sexual orientations.

Your job may also affect your premiums. High risk occupations such as being in the armed forces, working in the oil or gas industry, and fishing may incur higher premiums.

Keep in mind that sports such as parachuting, mountaineering, aviation and motor sports will affect your policy. If you undertake these activities on a one off basis then you may want to consider getting extra cover on your travel insurance if appropriate.
